Louise Bonnet, 1970
Louise Bonnet (b. 1970, Geneva, Switzerland) is a Los Angeles-based Swiss artist, known for her lavishly detailed oil paintings of distorted, faceless bodies. Influenced by Surrealist and Old Master art, her paintings depict tensed and exaggerated figures with bending extremities, writhing limbs or swollen hands and feet. Expressing inner agonies via allegorical depictions of the body, Bonnet's figures evoke the inexpressiblity of melancholy and agony, desire and grief, shamelessly exposed for the viewer. Anatomical elements such as noses, feet or genitalia are satirically inflated, drawing our attention to our social discomfort around certain body parts or depictions of ugliness.

Bonnet was born in Geneva, where she was educated as the Haute école d’art et de design. She moved to Los Angeles in 1994 and has lived there ever since. In 2008, following a career as a graphic designer, Bonnet began her career as an artist with a solo exhibition at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles, later moving into oil paint from arylics. The flexibility of this new medium allowed Bonnet to establish her signature light, voluminous and highly detailed form, outlined in rich chiaroscuro.

Bonnet featured in the Venice Biennale in 2022. Recent solo exhibitions include Bathers, Galerie Max Hetzler, Paris (2021); Sphinxes, Gagosian, Basel (2021); Vagabond, Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles (2021); and The Hours, Gagosian, New York (2020). Bonnet was also included in the group exhibition Stretching the Body, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (2021). Her work is held by numerous public collection worldwide, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, CA; the Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; ICA Miami, Miami, Florida; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; MAMCO Genève, Geneva, Switzerland; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Museum Brandhorst, Munich, Germany; Yuz Foundation, Shanghai, China.
