A brilliant exhibition of paintings and studies by the late British artist Victor Willing has opened at Mayfair art gallery Timothy Taylor. It focuses on the fierce, complex surrealism Willing explored in the 1970s and ’80s after he returned to England from Portugal, where he had lived with his wife Paula Rego. During this period, the artist painted furiously in response to hallucinations that appeared on the walls of his windowless Stepney studio and the result is a vast range of emotions, from joy to cerebral anxiety and the pain of mortality. Geometric yet metaphysical, the pieces feel uniquely attuned to the present moment, and the exhibition strikes the perfect balance of accessible and stirring, showcasing artworks that have never been displayed before.
