Four wide-eyed figures move within a pale grey landscape, abstracted into a constellation of shapeless blue and rose-coloured cells outlined in thick jet-black ink. Part of the 1975 Lieux abrégés series, Paysage avec 4 personnages (Landsacpe with 4 figures) fuses earlier techniques, such as Art Brut awkwardness and the cellular shapes of the Hourloupe series, with a rigorously defined landscape in harmonious pastel tones.

Each work in the Lieux abrégés series depicts the barest traces of a recognizable site; scale, colour and perspective are distorted, and disembodied figures float amid liberally applied paint. Dubuffet transforms details of the urban landscape into a deliberately simplified world of invention, distilling the subjectivity of everyday experience into surrealism.
