Armen Eloyan puts pen to paper in this latest series of drawings that subvert conventional illustration and storytelling. These works on paper (all 2024) depict caricatured dogs—pupils dilated and mouths agape—that surfaced initially in the artist’s “CRPs” or “cartoon-related paintings.” Here, Eloyan draws from his formative experience assisting Robert Sahakyants, an Armenian animator credited with packing individual frames with unprecedented action and surreal motifs. Eloyan’s compositions sustain a strange, primal narrative structure, scrambling beginning, middle, and end into a single scene. Drafted with frenetic energy, this series feels suspended from time as the artist’s thick contours and marker smudges transport the viewer to the very moment of its creation.
