Jean Dubuffet: 37 People
Timothy Taylor presents five exceptional late paintings by the French artist Jean Dubuffet, one of the most innovative artists of the European post-war period. 37 People focuses on paintings from Dubuffet’s 1975 Lieux abrégés (Abbreviated Places) series, the 1980 Partitions (Partitions) series and the 1982 Sites aléatoires (Random Sites) series.
Dubuffet dedicated the last decade of his life to a suite of major series in quick succession, which make up a third of his complete works. These series see Dubuffet explore expressionistic forms in the context of unspecified and increasingly abstract sites, often outlined thickly in black and accentuated by a spectrum of brilliant colours.
Visual motifs such as that of the suited city-dweller and allusions to urban geography recall the people, streets and sights of urban Paris, a crucial source of inspiration for Dubuffet during the sixties and seventies. Dominated by allusions to landscapes, castles, urban spaces and passages, his final paintings invite viewers to consider our surroundings as a metaphor for the tangled workings of the mind. -
