Museum Acquisition | Sahara Longe
The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) has just acquired Sahara Longe's Police Man (2023) to its permanent collection.
The large-scale diptych painting depicts ghostly silhouettes confronting a blue-suited London police officer. As in many of Longe's works, figures gaze past one another as if unaware of the presence of others, their blank expressions, bell-shaped coats and dresses, and frieze-like arrangement conspiring to distance them from the viewer.
This painting was included in the artist's debut solo exhibition at Timothy Taylor and first solo exhibition in the UK in 2023. The exhibition, titled New Shapes, signalled a newly geometric departure in the artist's compositions.
