Enter the Path: Suse Bauer, Andrew Palmer, Edward Wright

10 October - 17 November 2007 London
Overview

Using painting, sculpture, collage and drawing, the three artists in Enter the Path explore archetypes and symbolic languages, engaging in their own philosophical enquiries and investigating systems of belief or creating emotional and psychological landscapes.

Suse Bauer makes drawings and sculptures informed by her fascination with the intrinsic power of the mineral world. Bauer’s interest was kindled by a stay in Jerusalem – a city where literally every stone has a history, a significance and thereby a tangible potency. In a series of small drawings and collages, Bauer’s rocks, stones and crystalline structures strive for perfection – they speak of desire, longing and supreme effort.

Andrew Palmer’s small, often densely layered paintings depict a mysterious and spatially perplexing universe: stars and exploding worlds are all fashioned with minute precision – often containing mysterious imagery almost hidden from view. Palmer’s cosmos is elusive and subtle, even flowers or flames seem to take on a new and archetypal significance. Set mostly amongst dark grey settings and backgrounds, the centrally placed structures or objects hover, like thoughts or images in the minds’ eye.

Edward Wright’s paintings add a darker note – the groups of colleagues, friends or family depicted, engaged in group hugs, handshakes or other embraces, are enigmatic and ambiguous. Wright’s paintings investigate the intricacies of the social and the public, as his figures act out emotions of joy and pleasure. Into these images of harmony and community, Wright introduces a subtle note of malevolence to undercut the apparent sincerity of expression, and often uses a reduced tonal range to imply a further flattening and shallowness of the image.

Suse Bauer was born in Germany in 1979. She lives and works in Hamburg and recently had a solo exhibition there at Feinkunst Kruger Galerie. This is her first exhibition in London. Andrew Palmer was born in Salisbury, UK in 1979, and he lives and works in London. He graduated from the Slade with an MFA in 2005, and earlier this year exhibited at Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery, Munich. Edward Wright was born in Australia in 1971, and lives and works in London and Switzerland. He recently had a solo exhibition, First Born, at Mirko Mayer Gallery in Cologne.

Enter the Path is curated by Emma Dexter, newly appointed Director of Exhibitions at Timothy Taylor Gallery.
