Sean Scully: Paintings from the 70s

Timothy Taylor Gallery is proud to present a one-week exhibition of Sean Scully’s paintings of the late 1970s to celebrate the publication of the first fully illustrated monograph on the artist’s life and career.

This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to see an important body of work from the artist’s private collection. Sean Scully moved to New York in 1975 and his black paintings can be seen as a response to New York and the reductionism of Ryman and the Minimalism of Reinhardt. In these paintings colour differentiation is renounced, and the stripes narrow into severe horizontal lines made almost entirely of shades of black.

Published by Thames and Hudson and written by eminent art historian and critic David Carrier, the monograph ‘Sean Scully’ will provide a complete overview of Scully’s life and career, from his childhood in 1950s London to the present day in Munich.

The book launch will be held at the gallery on 31st March.
